Displaced residents of Sarthe

One Year Later. . .

I was talking with one of our point people in Port au Prince last night--Odnay Joseph--and we were reflecting on all that Haiti has been through in one short year.  This time last year a major earthquake led to over 300,000 peoples' lives lost and estimates of 1-2 million remain homeless to this day.  Later in the year, Cholera took the lives of another 2000 people.  Next came political unrest as elections were held last month and our contacts in the area reported feeling concerned for their lives and those of loved ones and stayed in their shelters and homes for fear of violence.  "If it's not one thing, it's another here in Haiti," said Odnay last night.

At Reyisi, we decided the best gift for the community of Sarthe, Port au Prince, was to send much needed food supplies.  Six hundred dollars worth of staple foods (rice, beans, corn, pasta, oil etc) were distributed by our trusted partners in the area.  The food distribution focused mainly on the displaced members of Sarthe's tent community where we recently set up the largest of the water filtering units to help protect against Cholera.
